Unusual pieced-together linen métis chemise, larger size, never worn
This wonderful chemise has been carefully constructed from pieces of good quality handwoven linen métis. The fabric looks like a cotton warp and handspun linen weft - these garments were cut so that the selvedges ran along the shoulders and hemline of the garment. The way that this has been perfectly pieced together makes it look like a cubist portrait of a chemise, and is testimony to the value of the cloth and how nothing was left to waste. It has a wide boatneck drawstring neckline with an interior cotton tape, and has been immaculately assembled by someone with a lot of skill. I don’t think this has ever been worn, because the basting stitches which would have held the pieces together as the maker pieced them are still in place over the garment. In any case it is in perfect condition, and I’ve not found anything exactly the same. It measures 72cm from armpit to armpit lying flat across the chest, which also makes it one of the larger of these pieces that I have found. It is 117cm long.
