Very old handwoven patterned linen tablecloth and three matching serviettes initials JR or TR
I think this set is older than their embroidered initials. Handwoven in pure linen with a beautiful fine woven pattern of exceptional quality, my guess is that these are from the second half of the 19th century, and that later someone added the embroidered initials, which are either JR or TR. This is backed up by a little red cross-stitched initial on one of the serviettes IR - same family, probably, and as linens formed part of an inheritance, especially for country people, it’s likely that one of the heirs added their own initials later.
The weaving in this is just beautiful. There is some wear to the selvedges, it is only in isolated spots and all four pieces are strong - but I need to signal it. There is a quite chunky visible repair on the tablecloth, which I have pictured. There are several very small rust-like stains and a larger very pale mark which you can see in the last photo - you’d have to be looking for it and it’s not going to catch the eye! Hand-stitched hems. The serviettes measure 71×84cm and the tablecloth is 133×184cm.
