{3K} Exquisite heavily-embroidered Loire Valley sheet border

€105.00
Sold

This amazing piece of embroidery work comes from a 19th century pure linen sheet. It was often the custom to cut the decorative borders off of very worn sheets, either to just have, or more often to attach to a new stronger sheet. I must stress that I did not cut this piece off, I never cut up good sheets, but I can tell from the underlying fabric in this section that the sheet really would have been quite worn. Nevertheless, the embroidery is impeccable. This is really an extraordinary piece, for the quantity of thick embroidery, and for the magnificent design with its graceful stacked lily-of-the-valley fronds. The embroidery also extends the entire width of the sheet and most of its depth, and it really is an artwork. I would urge you, if you are thinking of reusing this, to not cut through the embroidery as part of what is magnificent about this piece is the way the design flows, testimony to an embroidery woman who was also an artist. It measures 62cm deep and is a huge 242cm wide and embroidered right to the very edge on both sides.
