Early 20th century bobbin lace linen bedspread
This extraordinary creature was probably originally made as a decorative bedspread. It has been made using bobbin lace techniques (please see my newsletter on same from last year) in linen thread. I think it is probably around 1910-1920 - sort of corresponding with the arrival of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic to the masses, and this came with a huge collection of bobbin laces which I bought last year (and which I should put more up for sale!).
This is very beautiful, but it does have a number of damages. They don’t affect the usability of the piece, they are isolated, and would be repairable with a little bit of attention and patience, but this is not in perfect condition. I have photographed two of them to show you, there are five or six similar areas. But the quality of the lacemaking is superb - think of this like a huge piece of lace!
It is a little hard to measure - how long is an octopus!? but lying flat and measured along the sides without stretching it is 195×242cm.
