19th century pure linen chemise initials LD
A good, sturdy pure linen number that is quite fitted for these types of chemises. This has been made from machine-milled linen, and is in very good condition. There are a couple of areas which look like damage (see final photo) but are more mistakes in the weaving - 19th century mechanical looms often had trouble with breakages and unless the linen was of very high quality and destined for the upper end of the market, there wasn’t much quality control. Even today in the loom mills of companies like Libeco there are still people specifically employed to pick up and repair faults in the weave. But this chemise was made by and for a peasant or working person, and so nobody did much quality control on this linen! It’s still beautiful, smooth and cool and drapey.
This one is a slightly smaller size. It measures 52cm from armpit to armpit lying flat and is 107cm long. It has been handstitched.
